We did it...we managed to plan (and pack) for an entire week's vacation in LEGOLAND and keep it a surprise from the kids!! This was by far my most anticipated trip of 2016, I couldn't wait to see the kids faces when we told them that we were going to the airport to head to LEGOLAND. It was everything I had hoped for and more (the pictures are worth a thousand words)! We packed them in the car and said we were going to a meeting and had to be on our best behavior, then we handed the kids their iPads that had notes on the screen with a picture of LEGOLAND and a note that we were headed there to meet our friends! The kids were shocked to say the least, at first there was some confusion followed by lots and lots of questions but the kids were so excited for the adventure ahead.
Some things we learned while traveling to Winterhaven Florida at the end of June/beginning of July - first and foremost - it is HOT! We planned our first day of flying and just relaxing which was a good idea b/c the kids were tired from all of the excitement. The second day we woke up early and drove in to the park, covered ourselves in sunscreen and entered the gates for our greatest adventure yet! Some tips & tricks to keep in mind for your LEGOLAND trip...
1, Tickets - you can get discount tickets through many sites, we were able to get ours BOGO which made it fantastic for traveling with a family of 4.
2. Water - it is HOT and you don't realize how much walking you do, we froze our water bottles the night before which made them ice cold for us all day!
3. Pack your lunch - if you want to save $ you can pack a lunch and bring it in the park, this was a great option!
4. Get a locker - there are lockers to rent at the entrance to the park and the entrance to the water park, do yourself a favor and rent a locker.
5. Rent a stroller & make it a double - even if your kids are older, the stroller was a fantastic souvenir bag holder, water bottle holder, back-pack holder, etc.
6. Sunscreen - apply early in the day and often. Don't make the mistake that we made of lathering up in the parking lot on the first day...we were sweating before we even entered the park from standing on the hot asphalt for 20 min. The second day, we learned our lesson and applied sunscreen from inside the park under a shade tree :)
7. Split your day in half - we spent our mornings around the park and then right after lunch we hit the water park for the afternoon. This was a lifesaver for the kids who were hot and pretty much done for by lunchtime. (keep in mind that on a 98 degree day, the water was actually warmer than the air but it was still a nice way to end the day)
8. Visit the on-site hotel - it is really spectacular, the kids and the adults were in awe of the decorations, characters, and abundance of Lego's!
9. Bring Lego Mini-figures to swap - each employee has mini-figures on their name badges (some more than others) and if you ask, they will trade with you. The kids LOVED swapping mini-figures with the friendly staff in the park and it made it a fun game throughout the trip.
10. The Ruby Tuesday right outside of the gate has kids eat free night on Tuesday's, this was AMAZING after our first long hot day at the park!
