On Day 2 we decided to wake up early and rent a car to go to the Bacardi Factory, Old San Juan to visit the fort, and then we decided to drive straight across the island to Ponce and take the coast back up to San Juan...the sights were spectacular.
The Bacardi tour was so much fun, they have plenty of options for everyone if you want to take the historic tour, mixology tour or rum tasting tour. We were greeted with a fresh beverage and then off we went to learn the history of Bacardi Rum and how it is made. After this we traveled a bit further down the road to Old San Juan and visited the fort at El Morro and enjoyed the spectacular views. It was a really really really windy day and there were families enjoying flying kits and even a wedding, it was beautiful!
After the tour and the fort we got back in the car not sure what to do next, so we started driving and ended up in Ponce all the way across the island, this is also where the hurricane first made landfall. We drove through the hillsides and saw power lines still in the roads, many houses boarded up with no signs of the owners, and with the windows down we could hear the sound of the generators running. The views were spectacular on this side of the island, but it was sad to think of all of the people who were displaced from their homes and still haven't returned.
Tips - Bacardi Tour, it is worth it! The historic tour is all you need, it comes with a complimentary drink and souvenir glass which was plenty to get us through the tour. Old San Juan, is a must see! The view from the top of the fort is amazing, and the history is fascinating.
Stay tuned for details on our whirlwind cruise of the islands!
