October brought the opportunity to head down South for a few days of riding at Durhamtown Off Road Resort in Union Point, GA. I had just purchased a new 2017 KTM 450, I decided why not?! My good friend Greg and I, drove my Super Duty with the bikes in the back for ten hours straight through the night to meet up with the fellas for a few days of riding. Day 1 at Durhamtown was more of an exploratory day where we tried to get oriented to the area. They have several Motorcross tracks and plenty of trails to keep you busy. What we were most interested in was the dirtbike only single track. We were able to locate several of these single tracks that were perfect for intermediate - expert riders. Days 2 & 3 were spent enjoying the trails and getting to know my new bike. One of the guys on the trip was gracious enough to pull his fifth-wheel toy hauler all the way from Alabama which gave our group 5-star accommodations and all the comforts of home. Unfortunately, it had not rained for approximately 100 days in this part of town at this point, and it was extremely dusty. We had to space ourselves out, especially during the evening hours when the sun was low due to the dust and glare that made it almost impossible to see while riding.
Day 4 led us to Highland Park Resort in Cedartown, GA which was about 2 hours West of where we started. Highland Park had some of the best single track that I have ever ridden. All of the trails were marked with difficulty levels and when it said 5 stars, it meant 5 stars. Some of the single track was narrow enough for only a bike to pass through, at some points where the trail had washed away the crew at Highland Park had to make retaining walls along the trail to make it passable. By the end of this day, I was so worn out that I could barely hold on to my handlebars which made the Coors Light at the end of the day even more refreshing!
Some tips from my trip to help you plan yours...At both locations, the trails are well marked and maintained and maps are provided. I would highly recommend these trails for intermediate to expert riders, but there is something for everyone at both locations. At Durhamtown you can rent bikes daily, and all campsites have the necessary hookups for campers. There are also cabins for rent which provide another option for thrill seekers. Highland Park is primitive camping only, so make sure you bring your water and have a full fuel tank in your generator.
I am happy to answer any questions you may have before booking your trip. All in all, I would love to make the trip back to Durhamtown, and Highland Park again!
